Communication is more than spoken words. People communicate in different ways—through speech, signs, gestures, expressions, behavior, devices, pictures, movement and the ways they connect with the world around them.
Different communication does not mean the absence of thought, feeling, personality, preference or purpose. Listening means learning how a person communicates—not demanding that every person communicate the same way.
Autism can affect an entire family. The work, worry, appointments, advocacy, financial pressure, exhaustion and uncertainty can be real.
Support should recognize the individual first—and also the people standing beside them every day.
We’re not going to make promises today about money we haven’t earned or programs we haven’t built.
As The Newcomb Legacy Project grows, our goals include advocacy, community involvement, useful resources, events, partnerships, and—when we are capable of doing it responsibly—direct support.
No empty promises. No using autism as a marketing tool. When we say we're going to help, we want it to mean something.
We believe every person deserves the chance to build a life that belongs to them.
